Leo Gallery, (with Max Huckle), Shanghai, China
The work of Martin Kähler (b. 1987) often situates itself in fields of tension between construction and collapse as well as between the raw and the fragile. His sculptural compositions manifest themselves materially and spatially
in ways that are sensitive to the site and surroundings they are presented in. These arrangements sometimes even seem to have grown out of the spaces that they inhabit. In this way there is an inhererent, visceral sensibilty within the work, that constantly borders and negates the organic and the industrial. A process or struggle between the two that somehow, oddly presents itself as balanced works in space.” Time ” seems to be a factor in the work, that is hard to place. The objects can often seem simple and subtle at first glance, but with a closer investigative look, they appear to be intricately and delicately deliberate in the way the various found and manipulated materials come together. What is old? What is new? What is stolen? What is broken? Within these complicated dialectics of the ” mess ” there is a ” poetics of the poor ” at play in the work of Martin Kähler. A dusty play of precision.
